Caltrans Completing Repairs on Highway 178 Through Canyon

Caltrans said Thursday that repairs will begin as soon as Monday, November 6, on Highway 178 through the Kern River Canyon.

The agency will continue to address damage which compromised the highway believed to have been caused by this year’s record snowmelt in the southern Sierra Nevada.

According to Bakersfield.com, Caltrans expects to finish the job by April 2024.  A spokesman says repairs are not planned to involve any full closures of the highway, which for months has relied on traffic control measures allowing vehicles to pass the damaged section of road one direction at time while drivers at the other end wait for up to five minutes for their turn to proceed.
