Remember the old television announcement… “It’s 5 o’clock, do you know where your kids are”? Many people over 50 may remember when that was a popular question posed before the evening news. But in West Brighton New York, It was a question that at least one set of parents would have to react with surprise to learn the answer for them, their kids were in the sewer.

The 11 and 12 year old kids decided to explore the sewer when they discovered an open drain and climbed in. After a while, they realized they were completely lost and had no idea how to get back to the surface.

Fortunately, one of the teens had a cell phone, and miraculously, there was a signal so they did what ET would have done, and phoned home.

9-1-1 rescuers were able to hone in on the signal, locate the kids and pull them from a dark, dank underground labyrinth that could have become their grave if New York had received a rain like California did that same day.

The chief of the New York Fire Department said it was amazing that the phone worked in the tunnel.
